Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has cautioned Embakasi East MP Babu Owino against leaving the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy or the Citizens’ Party (DCP). Kaluma emphasized that such a move would undermine Owino’s political influence and threaten his ambitions to run for Nairobi governor in the 2027 elections.
He described Gachagua’s party as politically risky and warned that joining the new camp could harm Owino’s reputation and long-term prospects.
Owino Frustrated with ODM Politics
Babu Owino has expressed dissatisfaction with ODM’s internal processes, feeling sidelined despite years of loyalty. Reports indicate that party leader Raila Odinga favors Governor Johnson Sakaja as the ODM candidate for Nairobi’s next gubernatorial race.
Owino has acknowledged that securing the ODM ticket may be impossible, leaving him in a challenging position as he plans his political future. While he continues to respect Raila Odinga, Owino is exploring options amid growing uncertainty.
Concerns Over Nairobi Leadership
The Embakasi East MP has also criticized Governor Sakaja’s leadership, arguing that city residents have been let down. He accused President William Ruto of interfering in the impeachment process that aimed to remove Sakaja from office. Owino believes that allowing the governor more time to govern without accountability could worsen Nairobi’s challenges.
Political Tensions Ahead of 2027
Kaluma’s warning highlights rising tensions within ODM as succession politics take center stage. Owino faces a critical choice: remain loyal to ODM and risk being sidelined, or align with Gachagua’s emerging party, a decision that could make or break his political career in Nairobi.
With the 2027 elections approaching, Owino’s next steps will be closely watched, as they could redefine political alliances and shape Nairobi’s electoral landscape.
