Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has issued a stern warning to his Embakasi East counterpart Babu Owino, urging him to retrace his steps back to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga or risk facing political oblivion.
Speaking on Sunday, September 7, 2025, Kaluma likened Babu Owino to the mythical Icarus who flew too close to the sun, cautioning that defying the political orbit of Raila Odinga could lead to his downfall.
“Babu, like Icarus, you’re flying too close to the sun! Retrace your way back to Baba before it’s late,” Kaluma warned.
The Homa Bay MP further noted that political forces opposed to Owino have consistently sought to frustrate his rise, including sponsoring rival candidates and filing petitions against his electoral victories. He argued that these forces would never support Owino’s gubernatorial ambitions in Nairobi.
Babu Owino’s Stance
Kaluma’s remarks follow Owino’s candid admission last week that he does not expect ODM to endorse him for the Nairobi governorship in 2027. Speaking on Kameme TV on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Owino stated that Raila’s body language suggested he had another preferred candidate for the city’s top seat.
“I am sure I will not get the ODM ticket to vie for Nairobi Governor in 2027. Raila endorsed Sakaja in Bomas during the AUC prayer meeting, but I will respect Raila as my political godfather,” Owino said.
Despite expressing frustrations over being sidelined within the party, Owino emphasized his loyalty to Raila. He reminded Kenyans of his sacrifices, including arrests during demonstrations in support of the ODM leader.
“Nobody has ever loved Raila like I did… That is not the character of a person who distances himself from a party,” Owino affirmed.
Kaluma’s warning highlights growing tension within ODM as succession politics ahead of the 2027 general election continue to stir divisions.
