A section of KANU supporters in Baringo County has threatened to boycott the upcoming senatorial by-election following party chairman Gideon Moi’s sudden withdrawal from the race.
The supporters, visibly disappointed, described Moi’s decision as a betrayal after they had mobilized resources to witness him submit his nomination papers to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in Kabarnet.
Baringo North KANU Chairman Elijah Kandie said the party faithful felt abandoned.
“We have resolved that with our chairman not being on the ballot, we will not take part in this by-election,” he stated.
KANU Secretary General George Wainaina confirmed Moi’s withdrawal, explaining that it followed a series of consultations with President William Ruto. Consequently, KANU will not field a candidate in the by-election, leaving United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Vincent Kiprono Chemitei to face six other contenders.
Moi’s supporters expressed their anger by taking to the streets in Kabarnet, chanting anti-government slogans and vowing not to vote. Reports indicate that even Moi’s close aides were unaware of the last-minute decision, with campaign logistics and transport already arranged.
Chemitei, who secured victory during UDA primaries with 48,791 votes, downplayed the tensions, urging calm among residents.
“I’m even more energized. I urge my supporters to be calm as we forge ahead for a greater Baringo,” said Chemitei.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen welcomed Moi’s decision to cooperate with the government, describing it as a wise move toward fostering national unity.
Moi’s political influence in Baringo has waned in recent years, especially after losing the 2022 senatorial race to the late William Cheptumo. The by-election now sets the stage for a heated contest among eight candidates vying to fill the vacant seat.
