KANU Secretary General George Wainaina and two others have been released after being questioned in connection with the murder of Nairobi lawyer Kyalo Mbobu.
Sources said investigators found no evidence linking them to the killing.
Wainaina told The Star that he learned of his release at around 10 pm on Saturday. Police officers who had been guarding him suddenly left his premises.
“I had two officers during the day and two at night. On Saturday, around 10 pm, they abruptly left, saying they had been recalled,” Wainaina said. “They did not provide further explanation and only told me I was free to go.”
He explained that on the day of the murder, he briefly saw Mbobu and another acquaintance at a hotel parking lot. “I was with my nephew and was not with him for lunch,” he said.
The acquaintance, who was also questioned and later released, confirmed that they only saw Wainaina at the car park. CCTV footage reportedly supported this.
Police asked Wainaina to record a statement detailing his movements on the day of the attack.
Kyalo Mbobu, a former chairman of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, was shot dead on September 9, 2025. The attack happened along Magadi Road in Nairobi during the day.
A gunman riding pillion on a motorcycle fired multiple shots at close range, hitting Mbobu in the neck and chest. The attackers then fled, firing in the air to disperse bystanders.
The police continue to investigate Mbobu’s murder. Authorities are still gathering leads to identify those responsible for the attack.
