People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has launched a scathing critique of President William Ruto’s administration, suggesting that the head of state is not prepared to face the 2027 general elections. Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Karua questioned the president’s commitment to democratic processes, particularly pointing to the government’s handling of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Karua accused Ruto of orchestrating the exit of IEBC commissioners, leaving the commission non-functional at a critical time. She further criticised the delay in reconstituting the body, alleging that the president is using stalling tactics to deny the country a credible electoral process ahead of 2027.
“I’m looking at Dr. Ruto and I see a man who is not ready to go to elections; he denies the country an IEBC. Everything he’s doing is as if he has a title deed to State House,” Karua said. She also condemned the reported Ksh.1.2 billion church being constructed within State House grounds, questioning the use of public space and funds.
Karua did not mince words, calling on Kenyans to consider the power they hold under the Constitution. She argued that Ruto’s administration had already lost legitimacy during the Gen Z-led protests in 2023, and warned that his continued missteps could trigger an early end to his term.
“If you want to meet us on the ballot, change your ways, you and your illegitimate rogue regime. If not, Kenyans have the power to terminate the contract earlier,” she stated, reigniting the debate over the “one-term president” narrative.
She also dismissed the idea of a national dialogue, claiming it would only serve political elites while ignoring the real concerns of ordinary citizens. Instead, Karua urged Kenyans to take firm action and implement mechanisms to hold the government accountable.
Karua’s remarks come at a time of growing political tension, with opposition leaders increasingly vocal against what they perceive as authoritarian and unaccountable leadership from the Ruto regime.
