People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has announced that the United Opposition is preparing to establish a parallel electoral oversight body, dubbed the People’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (PIEBC), ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a bold declaration during an interview on Thursday, Karua reiterated the opposition’s commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in the upcoming polls. “I want to restate very firmly that in this election, we will be vigilant, we will not allow mischief,” she said.
Karua emphasized that the opposition would not remain passive in the face of electoral manipulation, vowing that the PIEBC will monitor the process, provide guidance, and uphold democratic integrity. “Even if Ruto is both the IEBC chairman and a candidate, this election will not be rigged,” she added, expressing strong mistrust in the current electoral system.
She urged citizens across the country to play an active role in protecting the sanctity of the vote. “Kenyans too, will be vigilant. I want to ask everyone, wherever you are, let’s be ready, let’s ensure we all vote from every corner of Kenya and stay alert,” Karua appealed.
Her remarks come as political temperatures rise and opposition voices demand reforms within the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The credibility and impartiality of the commission have remained contentious issues in Kenya’s electoral history.
This development follows the swearing-in of IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon, who on July 11 pledged his loyalty to the people of Kenya. Speaking at the Supreme Court, Ethekon affirmed his commitment to upholding the Constitution and ensuring that every vote counts. “My first and foremost loyalty is to the people of Kenya… I wish to assure Kenyans that their voices will not only be heard but will also count during the coming elections,” he stated.
As the country edges closer to the 2027 elections, Karua’s call for a parallel oversight body signals a potentially heated electoral season, with the opposition poised to challenge any perceived irregularities through citizen-led initiatives.
