Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been appointed the new party leader of the Umoja na Maendeleo Party, marking a significant political comeback following her controversial ouster from office. The announcement was made public through a gazette notice dated July 4, issued by Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu.
Mwangaza takes over the party leadership from Charles Wambora Mugambi. According to the notice, any individual or group opposed to her appointment has a seven-day window to submit written objections to the Registrar’s office. This move positions Mwangaza to play a key role in shaping the party’s political direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Other leadership changes within the party include the appointment of Victor Koome Mwangaza as Deputy Party Leader, replacing Haron Shamala. Miriam Karwira will serve as the national chairperson, while Robert Murega Rimberia has been named Secretary-General, succeeding Stella Kagendo.
The leadership overhaul comes shortly after Mwangaza officially exited the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Her husband, Murega Baichu, accused the ruling party of being behind her impeachment, claiming it orchestrated her downfall due to political differences.
Mwangaza’s tenure as Meru Governor was cut short in August 2023 when the Meru County Assembly impeached her after two prior unsuccessful attempts. She faced allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violation of the constitution. Isaac Mutuma was sworn in as her successor just three days after her removal.
Despite the impeachment setback, Mwangaza’s new political role suggests a determined effort to reassert her influence on the national stage. Her leadership of Umoja na Maendeleo Party signals a shift in political alliances and could attract other leaders dissatisfied with the current political landscape.
Political analysts believe Mwangaza’s re-emergence could galvanize grassroots support in the Mount Kenya region, particularly among voters disillusioned with mainstream parties. Whether she can overcome her past controversies and rebuild her political base remains to be seen, but her new position provides a fresh platform for her political ambitions.
