Kenya has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to regional peace and security, emphasizing the need for a coordinated approach among East African Community (EAC) member states. This comes as the 9th Sectoral Council on Interstate Security (SCISS) of the EAC convened in Entebbe, Uganda, on May 22, 2025.
Speaking during the opening session, the Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, reiterated Kenya’s support for regional integration and collaborative security efforts. “Kenya remains committed to a secure, peaceful, and integrated East African Community. We continue to support joint operations, cross-border programmes, and initiatives that enhance our collective resilience,” Omollo stated.
Dr. Omollo highlighted a series of transboundary challenges confronting the region, including violent extremism, climate-induced conflicts, health emergencies, the proliferation of small arms, cybercrime, and human trafficking. He called for a unified strategy and enhanced coordination among EAC partner states to address these evolving threats effectively.
“Our presence here is a testament to the shared recognition that security is no longer a national issue alone, but a regional and global responsibility,” he said, emphasizing the importance of taking stock of progress and strategizing for the future.
Omollo further noted that Kenya has remained consistent in meeting its statutory contributions to the EAC, reflecting its dedication to the regional integration agenda. He urged the Sectoral Council to prioritize the implementation of previously agreed-upon strategies, promote mutual trust, and uphold the Pan-African vision that anchors the EAC’s solidarity.
The high-level session reviewed the implementation status of past decisions and directives at both the regional and national levels. According to a report from the EAC Secretariat, Kenya had partially implemented its commitments related to peace and security but reaffirmed its intention to fulfil these obligations progressively.
