Kenya has cemented its role as a key player in continental policing after winning a seat on the INTERPOL Africa Committee during the 27th INTERPOL African Regional Conference held in Cape Town, South Africa.
In a decisive vote of confidence by member states, Ibrahim Jillo, Director of the National Central Bureau (NCB)–Kenya, was elected to the influential body that shapes law enforcement priorities across Africa. His election, which will see him serve a four-year term, positions Kenya at the forefront of policy formulation and coordination in combating transnational organised crime, terrorism, cybercrime, human trafficking, and financial crimes.
The development is being hailed as both a diplomatic and security milestone, highlighting Kenya’s growing reputation as a regional hub for counterterrorism and cross-border intelligence cooperation. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Jillo’s election is not only a personal achievement but also a reflection of Kenya’s sustained investment in strengthening its law enforcement institutions and fostering collaboration with global policing agencies.
“This election reflects strong confidence in Kenya’s leadership and its unwavering commitment to enhancing regional and international cooperation in law enforcement,” the DCI said in a statement on Saturday. The agency noted that the support expressed by African member states underscores trust in Kenya’s credibility and leadership in steering complex multinational security initiatives.
The INTERPOL Africa Committee, composed of representatives from selected member countries, plays a critical role in aligning regional policing strategies with global security priorities. The committee provides guidance to INTERPOL’s General Assembly on issues unique to the African continent. Kenya’s inclusion is expected to enhance its influence in shaping the agenda on key security threats while ensuring that African perspectives are more prominently represented in global security forums.
The DCI extended gratitude to fellow African nations for their overwhelming support and reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to deepening cooperation with partners across the continent. “Kenya remains dedicated to collaborating with partners across Africa and beyond to ensure the safety and security of communities,” the agency concluded.
