Kericho Governor Erick Mutai is once again staring down the barrel of impeachment, less than a year after surviving a similar ouster attempt in the Senate. On Wednesday, Kedowa/Kimugul Ward MCA Nicholas Chumba tabled a fresh motion in the county assembly, accusing the governor of presiding over a corrupt and opaque administration.
Chumba cited a recently adopted Ad Hoc Committee report that he claims uncovered massive financial irregularities, including fraudulent payments, irregular procurement, and the misuse of public funds amounting to millions of shillings. According to the MCA, the report provides credible new evidence that Governor Mutai has failed to exercise proper oversight over county finances and has authorized the use of public funds without lawful authority.
“If you excuse this, you declare open season for theft in Kericho,” Chumba told the assembly, urging his fellow MCAs to support the motion.
In a parallel development, Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony also tabled a separate motion seeking Governor Mutai’s removal. Rogony accused the governor of misappropriating funds intended for development projects and cited irregularities in county tenders. He claimed that payments were made upfront for goods and services that were never delivered, contributing to pending bills exceeding Ksh.1 billion.
This is not the first time Governor Mutai has faced such accusations. In October 2024, a similar impeachment motion, also led by MCA Rogony, alleged gross constitutional violations and abuse of office. The governor was also accused of leading an illegal seizure of private land for use as a dumpsite and of inappropriate conduct toward women.
Although 31 out of 47 MCAs voted for his impeachment last year, the motion failed in the Senate, where 34 senators upheld the governor’s objection, compared to 10 who voted for his removal.
Governor Mutai has consistently denied all allegations, claiming political witch-hunt and procedural flaws in the impeachment attempts.
With new evidence now tabled and growing discontent among MCAs, the political future of Governor Mutai hangs in the balance as Kericho braces for yet another high-stakes political showdown.
