Four Members of the Kericho County Assembly have been suspended after allegedly attacking and destroying property at Governor Eric Mutai’s office during the heated impeachment process.
The incident occurred on August 15, 2025, just days after the impeachment motion against Governor Mutai was tabled. According to CCTV footage, the MCAs were captured throwing stones and vandalizing property at the governor’s office, located about 500 meters from the county assembly.
Those suspended include Kapsaos MCA Paul Bii and nominated members Irene Chebet, Noela Opile, and Fancy Korir. The footage also revealed broken windows and damaged county assembly property during the chaos.
Kericho County Assembly Majority Leader Philip Rono confirmed the disciplinary action, stating that the MCAs’ conduct violated the dignity of the assembly.
“These members threw stones and destroyed county assembly property, which is not good behaviour. The committee has suspended them for 90 days, and they will not perform any responsibilities during this period,” Rono said.
In addition to the suspension, some members have been directed to issue formal apologies to the Assembly’s Powers and Privileges Committee.
Governor Mutai Survives Impeachment
Governor Eric Mutai had faced an impeachment motion filed on August 6, 2025, accusing him of misconduct, misuse of office, and violation of the Constitution. After the county assembly voted to impeach him, the matter proceeded to the Senate for trial.
However, during the Senate sitting on August 29, 2025, 25 Senators voted to save Mutai, ruling that the accusations lacked sufficient grounds for removal. This decision ended weeks of political tension in Kericho, but divisions remain among MCAs.
The suspensions now highlight the growing rifts within the assembly as Kericho leaders grapple with fallout from the failed impeachment.
