The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has denied claims circulating online regarding the alleged construction of a luxury hotel within the Ngong Road Forest. In a statement issued on Thursday, the agency clarified that the development in question is a tented camp with semi-permanent infrastructure, not a hotel, and has been approved under the existing Ngong Road Forest Management Plan.
According to KFS, the camp was sanctioned following a thorough Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and in accordance with all legal procedures. Additionally, the project underwent a public participation process, conducted in collaboration with the Community Forest Association (CFA), and received support from key stakeholders.
“KFS wishes to clarify that this camp, comprising tents on semi-permanent infrastructures, is an approved development under the Ngong Road Forest Management Plan,” read part of the statement.
The Forest Service added that the development is part of a broader effort to enhance the Sanctuary block of the forest, which includes the installation of an electric fence for improved security. These improvements are intended to support natural regeneration and offer controlled public access to the forest.
The project aims to create a high-quality green space for Nairobi residents and ease the pressure on Karura Forest, which currently accommodates over 80,000 visitors each month. The KFS noted that the initiative is being implemented with support from various stakeholders, including forest-adjacent communities and the I&M Foundation, which has committed KSh200 million to the development.
The clarification comes after the Greenbelt Movement, an environmental organization, claimed in a widely circulated letter that a luxury hotel was under construction in the forest. KFS expressed concern over the allegations, stating that such information could mislead the public and incite unnecessary discontent.
“KFS notes with concern that the Greenbelt Movement, a long-standing partner, is disseminating what appears to be misleading information,” the statement said.
KFS reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable forest management and called on the public to support initiatives aimed at preserving and expanding green spaces across the country.
