George Oduor, the driver of Kibra Member of Parliament Peter Orero, has been fined KSh100,000 or sentenced to 12 months in jail after pleading guilty to dangerous driving. The ruling was delivered by Milimani magistrate Rose Ndombi following a viral video showing Oduor dangerously overtaking traffic along Oloitoktok Road in Nairobi.
The video, captured by journalist Larry Madowo, showed Oduor driving MP Orero’s Toyota Prado on the wrong side of the road while shouting insults at other motorists. The clip sparked widespread outrage, with many Kenyans condemning the blatant display of impunity.
Appearing before court, Oduor admitted guilt and sought leniency, claiming it was his first offence and that he had been rushing to the airport. “I’m a first-time offender and I will not repeat the mistake,” he told the court.
However, the prosecution urged the court to impose the maximum penalty, arguing that the act was deliberate and showed a disregard for the law. “The overtaking was intentional and the driver’s reaction as captured in the video reeks of impunity,” the state submitted.
In her ruling, Magistrate Ndombi fined Oduor KSh100,000, the highest fine prescribed by law, or one year in jail in default. She also granted him 14 days to appeal the sentence if he so wished.
The incident prompted the National Police Service (NPS) to reiterate that only emergency and presidential motorcades are allowed to obstruct traffic. Police spokesperson Michael Muchiri and Traffic Commandant Fredrick Ochieng’ emphasized that VIP privileges do not exempt motorists from obeying traffic rules.
The case has reignited debate on road discipline and accountability, with Kenyans calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws regardless of political or social status.
