Kibra Member of Parliament Peter Orero’s driver has been arraigned in a Nairobi court after a viral video captured by CNN journalist Larry Madowo allegedly showed him violating traffic rules.
In the video, which quickly circulated across social media platforms, the driver is seen driving on the wrong side of the road while hurling insults at other motorists. MP Orero, seated inside the vehicle, appeared unbothered by the incident and even challenged Madowo to share the footage with President William Ruto a comment many interpreted as a display of arrogance and disregard for the law.
The viral footage prompted swift public outrage, with Kenyans online condemning what they described as a blatant case of impunity among individuals associated with political leaders. In response, the National Police Service (NPS) issued a statement denouncing the misuse of VIP privileges to obstruct traffic.
Police spokesperson Michael Muchiri clarified that only emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire engines, and the President and Deputy President’s motorcades are permitted to disregard traffic rules. “No one is above the law. Only vehicles responding to emergencies have such clearance,” Muchiri said.
Traffic Police Commandant Fredrick Ochieng’ confirmed that the police had launched investigations based on the viral footage. “We used the video to identify the vehicle and driver. Once verified, the suspect was summoned and arraigned to face charges,” Ochieng’ stated.
The case has once again reignited debate on road discipline and equality before the law. Many Kenyans have called for stricter enforcement of traffic rules to ensure that all motorists, regardless of their social or political status, are held accountable.
The court proceedings mark a significant step in addressing VIP-related traffic violations, a persistent issue that has long frustrated ordinary road users across the country.
