Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has reaffirmed the Kenya Kwanza administration’s commitment to supporting churches across the country, emphasizing that the government will continue making contributions to churches in need.
Speaking during an interdenominational church service in Amagoro, Busia County, Kindiki clarified that the government’s support to churches is driven by a shared goal of fostering national development and uplifting the spiritual and social wellbeing of Kenyans.
“As leaders, we will be responsive towards the development needs of the church. Churches that are self-sufficient and may not need our contributions will have their way, but that will not stop us from supporting those churches that need our support,” said Kindiki.
The Deputy President stressed that the government has no conflict with the church and respects its independence and spiritual authority. He dismissed any perception of rivalry between the state and the church, stating that the two institutions serve complementary roles in society.
“The government of the Republic of Kenya respects the church. There is absolutely no conflict or competition between the government and the church,” he said. “The State recognizes the noble role the church plays in promoting peace, morality, and safeguarding our spiritual health as a nation.”
Kindiki urged church leaders to continue guiding the government with love and constructive criticism, noting that healthy cooperation between faith groups and state institutions is essential for national unity and development.
“There is no contest between the King and the Prophet. These two offices are separate but complementary,” he said, referring to the biblical metaphor to illustrate the mutual roles of government and church leadership.
He concluded by encouraging mutual respect and partnership between the church and the state, asserting that both institutions are divinely appointed to serve the people in different capacities.
“We serve the same people in different roles, and all of us are placed here by God to fulfill our duties,” Kindiki said.
