Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has reiterated the government’s resolve to achieve lasting peace in Kerio Valley through intensified disarmament efforts. Speaking during the Elgeyo-Marakwet Economic Empowerment Engagement at Sambirir Grounds in Marakwet East, Kindiki said the ongoing disarmament marks the final phase in restoring normalcy in the North Rift region.
The Deputy President noted that significant progress has been made in the war against banditry, with multi-agency security teams successfully suppressing criminals and recovering hundreds of illegal firearms. “Disarmament will ensure long-lasting peace in Kerio Valley. I believe Murkomen will complete what we started and deliver lasting security in the area,” Kindiki said, pledging full government support for Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
Since the launch of the exercise, over 285 firearms and 2,000 rounds of ammunition have been surrendered voluntarily. Kindiki commended residents for their cooperation and assured them that once the disarmament is complete, the President will lead a symbolic firearm burning ceremony to mark a new era of peace and development.
He further highlighted the government’s plans to empower residents economically, pledging more investments in infrastructure and energy. “We will hold major empowerment events to help residents engage in productive activities once peace is fully restored,” he added.
Kindiki also announced that Sh780 million had been disbursed for last-mile electricity connections benefiting 9,000 households, while stalled road projects such as the Kapyego–Chesoi and Chesoi–Embobut roads had resumed.
The DP lauded Elgeyo-Marakwet residents for embracing the Social Health Authority (SHA) cover, noting the county ranks third nationally in enrollment. Leaders accompanying Kindiki included Interior CS Murkomen, Governor Wesley Rotich, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, and several MPs from the region.
The government remains committed to ensuring peace, stability, and development across the Kerio Valley region.
