Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s remarks, which sparked a wave of controversy, have been defended by his colleague, DP Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, who categorically dismissed claims of disrespecting or lecturing CS Ruku. The claims stemmed from a widely circulated video in which Kindiki was heard addressing Ruku during a meeting in Siakago, Embu County.
Kindiki responded to the allegations, calling them “desperate, mischievous, and utterly malicious.” He clarified that his comments were not directed at CS Ruku but at former leaders who, during their time in government, had undermined the principle of collective responsibility. The Deputy President emphasized that his words were meant to underscore the importance of unity and cooperation within the government.
“My remark being discussed referred to a former Cabinet Secretary from the same area and other ex-leaders who manifested similar conduct,” Kindiki stated. “Governments worldwide operate on the principle of collective responsibility, and everyone in government must align with its policies to advocate for service delivery.”
In his response to the allegations, Kindiki reminded government officials of the duty they hold in supporting the administration they serve. He reiterated that being a part of the government means promoting its agenda and not undermining it through complaints or criticisms. “Pretending to be ‘clever’ by undermining a government that you are a senior part of is illegal and anti-people,” he added.
The controversy arose when CS Ruku, during the consultative meeting, requested a road project to be expedited. Kindiki responded sharply, reminding Ruku that as a Cabinet Secretary, he had the power to push for such initiatives within the government, and that complaining publicly was not acceptable. “You are no longer a Member of Parliament,” Kindiki said. “You are a minister, and you should be advocating for the completion of the project, not complaining about it.”
Despite the pointed remarks, Kindiki clarified that his relationship with Ruku remains intact. His aim, he explained, was simply to reinforce the responsibilities associated with holding a Cabinet position, where unity and constructive action are key to serving the public.
