Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has sparked fresh speculation over a possible political realignment after he openly expressed interest in working with Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka. Speaking during an economic empowerment event in Kitui on Thursday, Kindiki described Kalonzo as a noble and principled leader who has been misled by divisive political elements.
“I have seen people staying close to him to influence him in politics he does not identify with,” Kindiki said. “He is respectable and a lawyer just like me, but now the group he is working with is linking him to tribalism but I will look for him.”
Kindiki’s comments appear to be a subtle invitation for Kalonzo to consider aligning with his emerging political axis, which is increasingly seen as distinct from that of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. In a thinly veiled swipe at Gachagua, Kindiki questioned who, between them, was better suited to offer Kalonzo direction toward meaningful development rather than “empty rhetoric.”
“Between me and that other guy, who is Kalonzo’s true brother? Who can direct Kalonzo on the right path and not mislead him?” Kindiki posed, suggesting a growing rivalry within Kenya Kwanza.
The remarks underscore the widening rift between Kindiki and Gachagua, whose feud became public in March when Gachagua criticized Kindiki for hosting artists and accused him of using them to sanitize government failures. In a swift rebuttal, Kindiki warned that Gachagua’s remarks risked national unity, exposing the sharp ideological differences between the two.
Kalonzo, for his part, has remained a prominent figure in the opposition coalition, allied with Gachagua’s faction alongside Martha Karua (PLP), Fred Matiang’i, and Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K). Despite that, Kindiki appears intent on swaying the Wiper leader, possibly seeing him as a pivotal figure in reshaping the political landscape ahead of 2027.
As Kindiki positions himself as a moderate voice advocating national unity and inclusive development, his overtures to Kalonzo may signal the start of significant political recalibrations within and beyond the ruling alliance. Whether Kalonzo will bite remains to be seen.
