United Democratic Alliance (UDA) senatorial aspirant Kiprono Chemitei has officially been cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to contest in the upcoming Baringo senatorial by-election, set for November 27, 2025.
Chemitei arrived in Kabarnet on Thursday, accompanied by several UDA lawmakers, to submit his nomination papers to the IEBC returning officer. After successful verification, he was given the green light to vie for the Baringo Senate seat.
Chemitei earned the UDA ticket after emerging victorious in the party primaries, where he garnered 48,791 votes. His closest rival, Tobole Kipsang Kibor Wycliffe, secured 30,897 votes, while Daniel Kiptoo Korir finished third with 23,613 votes.
The IEBC confirmed that it is finalizing the registration of candidates in 24 electoral areas ahead of the by-elections. The commission stated that the exercise involves verifying each nominee’s eligibility based on constitutional and legal requirements.
Once cleared, candidates will be allowed to embark on official campaigns, which will run daily from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and conclude on Monday, November 24, 2025, just 48 hours before polling day.
IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon Edung assured Kenyans that the commission is fully prepared to conduct the polls after securing adequate funding from the National Treasury.
“We would like to assure the country and citizens that all preparations are in top gear, and the resources we needed to conduct successful by-elections are now available to us,” Edung stated.
He also emphasized the commission’s ongoing collaboration with political stakeholders and the Political Parties Liaison Committee to enhance transparency and readiness, not only for the upcoming by-elections but also for the 2027 General Election.
