Kitui East Member of Parliament Nimrod Mbai is mourning the sudden loss of his mother, Dorcas Kanini Mbai, who died in a tragic road accident on Sunday, July 21, in Machakos County.
The fatal crash occurred along the busy Nairobi–Garissa Highway at Kithimani in Yatta sub-county. According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle in which the late Kanini was traveling lost control and plunged into the Yatta Canal. She was reportedly en route from her home in Zombe, Kitui County, heading to Nairobi at the time of the incident.
Kanini died on the spot, while the two other occupants a male driver and a second female passenger sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a private hospital in Kithimani for treatment.
“With a heavy heart, I share the heartbreaking news that I have lost my beloved mother, Dorcas Kanini Mbai, in a tragic road accident at Kithimani… God, who gives, has taken away. Rest in peace, Mama. You were loved,” the MP wrote on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Emergency responders who arrived at the scene found Kanini still trapped in the vehicle wreckage. Witnesses described the vehicle as veering off the road before crashing into the canal, highlighting the danger along that particular stretch of road.
The news has drawn widespread sympathy from political leaders and members of the public. Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka expressed his sorrow, saying, “I’m deeply saddened to learn of the sudden death of Dorcas Mbithuka, mother to Hon. Nimrod Mbai… I convey my utmost condolences to her family and the entire people of Kitui East.”
Machakos Town MP Caleb Mule also sent his condolences, stating, “May God comfort you and your family during this mourning period, and may He grant you peace and strength.”
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the cause of the accident, though investigations are ongoing.
The incident adds to growing concerns about road safety along the Nairobi–Garissa Highway, which has witnessed an increase in fatal accidents in recent months.
