The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has urged Kenyans to remain calm, peaceful and vigilant as the country holds by-elections in various constituencies and wards today. In a statement released on Wednesday, the Commission emphasized the need for accountability and full adherence to the rule of law throughout the electoral process.
KNCHR expressed concern over several incidents reported during the campaign period for the Senatorial, National Assembly and County Assembly seats. Among the most worrying were the clashes in Kasipul Constituency, where two people lost their lives, as well as disruptions to campaign activities in other areas. The Commission also highlighted allegations of excessive force by police and the presence of non-uniformed officers in Mbeere North—an action that goes against an existing High Court order.
According to the Commission, these incidents raise serious human rights issues, including the right to life, security, peaceful assembly and political participation. KNCHR reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the electoral process and ensuring that such rights are respected.
The body urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct the by-elections fairly and transparently, and to guarantee adequate security for both voters and candidates. Political parties and aspirants were also encouraged to maintain peaceful conduct, refrain from violence, hate speech and voter bribery, and respect the rights of all participants.
Law enforcement agencies were reminded to uphold human rights principles, exercise restraint and avoid excessive use of force while providing security during the polls. KNCHR further appealed to the media to report accurately and responsibly, noting the press plays a crucial role in promoting peace and discouraging inflammatory narratives.
Members of the public were encouraged to remain peaceful and report any election-related violations promptly. The Commission stressed that every citizen has the right to vote or be voted for without intimidation, coercion or bribery.
To monitor compliance, KNCHR has deployed commissioners, staff and field monitors across all election zones. These teams will document human rights issues and provide updates, culminating in a comprehensive final report.
Reports of violations can be submitted via SMS to 22359, WhatsApp 0798 849 871, toll-free line 0800 720 627, or email complaint@knchr.org.
