Moses Kuria, former Senior Economic Advisor to President William Ruto, has called for reinforced security in Mbeere North as tensions rise ahead of the November 27 parliamentary by-election. Speaking at a press briefing on Saturday, November 22, Kuria emphasized the need to protect leaders campaigning in the region to prevent chaos and safeguard Kenya’s electoral integrity.
Kuria noted that he has already engaged senior election officials to ensure adequate security measures are in place. He warned that unchecked disorder could tarnish Kenya’s reputation on the international stage, which is closely monitoring the electoral process.
“Just the other day, someone suggested that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua should not come here. I immediately urged the IEBC to act, and those responsible were summoned by the DCI. If Gachagua is threatened, it affects the integrity of the entire election,” Kuria stated.
Reflecting on the 2007 post-election violence, Kuria expressed concern over widespread insecurity in areas such as Narok and Mbeere North. He urged President William Ruto to intervene, emphasizing that the international community is watching closely.
Kuria also cautioned political leaders against engaging in election malpractice, stressing that Kenya’s tolerance for such actions is minimal. “Let no leader think of stealing votes. Kenyans are not Tanzanians; it will not be business as usual,” he said.
The warning follows a recent incident in Chwele Kabuchai Ward, where Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya narrowly escaped an attack while campaigning for independent MCA candidate Erick Wekesa. Natembeya’s Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) accused goons allegedly linked to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula of orchestrating the assault.
Mbeere North has become a focal point for national political figures ahead of the by-election. Kuria is campaigning for Ireri Mbui, Gachagua is supporting United Opposition candidate Newton Karish, while Deputy President Kithure Kindiki backs Leonard Muthede under the UDA Party.
As election day approaches, Kuria’s call highlights the urgent need for security and vigilance to ensure a peaceful voting process in Mbeere North.
