Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has urged former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to uphold dignity and restraint in his public conduct, even as his political influence in the Mt Kenya region continues to grow.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Kuria acknowledged Gachagua’s rising stature in the region, describing him as the “undisputed kingpin of the Mountain.” However, he cautioned him against using demeaning language when addressing fellow leaders and especially women.
“To my brother Rigathi Gachagua, I am an honest man. It is an undeniable fact that the majority of our Mt Kenya people listen to you,” Kuria said. “You are ahead of the rest of us. You are edging closer to being our undisputed Kingpin in the Mountain.”
Kuria added that he was open to working with Gachagua in the near future, citing the example of political partnerships such as Gideon Moi and William Ruto’s past collaboration. However, he made what he called a “humble request” for Gachagua to maintain decorum.
“Kindly refrain from insulting our leaders in general, our women leaders in particular and all Mt Kenya women by extension. It doesn’t really sound commensurate with your undisputed kingpin status,” Kuria said.
His remarks came after Gachagua reportedly accused some leaders of being bought to secure their loyalty, a statement that drew backlash for being disrespectful.
Kuria noted that while he respects Gachagua’s political rights, he disagrees with his style, particularly his reliance on tribal politics. “At this age and time, we cannot conduct politics as we did in the 90s. Everything is finite, including tribalism,” Kuria said.
He added, “There comes a time when politics that revolves around tribe has no space in this country. Even me, maybe there was a time I could have been accused of tribalism. Granted. But every angel has a past, and every sinner has a future.”
