Two Members of Parliament have expressed frustration after being denied access to Juja MP George Koimburi at Karen Hospital, where he is admitted under unclear circumstances. Koimburi is reportedly nursing injuries allegedly sustained during what he claimed was an abduction.
However, the police have dismissed the abduction narrative, labeling it as staged. Authorities claim there is no evidence the MP sustained injuries and suggested he might be “enjoying a five-course meal” during his hospital stay.
Concerned for their colleague’s well-being, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula mandated Turkana West MP Daniel Nanok and Narok West MP Gabriel Tongoyo to visit Koimburi and report back to the House. Wetang’ula appointed the pair in their capacities as chairs of the Parliamentary Broadcasting Committee and the Administration and Security Committee respectively.
On Tuesday, Nanok and Tongoyo arrived at Karen Hospital but were met with resistance. “We were kept waiting for more than half an hour in the waiting bay, then moved to another lobby on the third floor,” Tongoyo told the House on Wednesday.
Despite identifying themselves and explaining their mission, the MPs were met by six individuals, said to be family and staff members of Koimburi, along with two security guards. They were told the MP could not be seen at the moment.
“We made it clear our visit was pursuant to a directive from the Speaker and purely about Koimburi’s welfare, but our request was still denied,” Tongoyo reported.
Attempts to speak with the attending doctor were also unsuccessful. Instead, they were introduced to a senior nurse who cited medical advice and privacy reasons for the restricted access. She informed them that Koimburi was undergoing a procedure but assured the MPs he was in stable condition.
Feeling stonewalled, Nanok and Tongoyo opted to leave. “The people there looked at us with suspicion, as if we were there for other reasons,” Tongoyo remarked, expressing concern over the secrecy surrounding the MP’s condition.
The incident has raised further questions over the legitimacy of Koimburi’s alleged abduction and his current medical status.
