A Nairobi-based advocate has filed a motion seeking the removal of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen from the Roll of Advocates, citing their alleged complicity in state-sanctioned violence during the 2024–2025 Gen Z protests.
The motion, filed by lawyer Kepha Ojijo and submitted to the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) on Monday, accuses the two senior officials of gross professional misconduct and violating the Advocates’ Code of Conduct while serving in high-level security portfolios.
Ojijo contends that both Kindiki, the former Interior CS, and Murkomen, his successor, oversaw police operations that led to the deaths, injuries, abductions, and disappearances of young protesters during the nationwide demonstrations. “The respondents continue to identify as advocates while overseeing state-sanctioned brutality,” the motion reads. “This misleads the public and demeans the integrity of the legal profession.”
The protests, largely led by Gen Z activists, erupted in opposition to the Finance Bill 2024 and quickly evolved into a broader movement against corruption, unemployment, and political impunity. Human rights organisations have documented multiple cases of excessive force used by police, including live ammunition and enforced disappearances.
Ojijo argues that the actions of Kindiki and Murkomen amount to a betrayal of the legal profession’s commitment to justice and human rights. He is urging the LSK to convene a Special General Meeting to deliberate on the motion. Alternatively, he recommends referring the matter to the Advocates Disciplinary Tribunal.
“If the respondents wish to engage in politics, they should do so without wearing the hat of advocates,” he states.
If the motion is adopted, it could lead to rare disciplinary proceedings against two of Kenya’s top-ranking officials—both of whom built their public profiles as lawyers before entering politics. The development has stirred debate in legal and political circles, with some viewing it as a long-overdue move to hold powerful figures accountable, while others see it as politically motivated.
The LSK is expected to issue a formal response in the coming days.
