Kenyan lawyer and activist Shadrack Wambui presented himself at the Rongai Police Station on Monday, June 30, 2025, in response to a summons by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) concerning the June 25 protests in Rongai.
Wambui, who has been vocal on issues of justice and governance, said he was at the station to record a statement regarding the peaceful demonstration organised by his group, Sheria Mtaani na Shadrack Wambui, to honour the late Kennedy Onyango. Onyango died during protests held the previous year, and the June 25 protest was meant to commemorate his life and push for justice.
According to Wambui, the protest was held peacefully, with plans for a candlelighting activity. However, he said the gathering was disrupted by unknown individuals who infiltrated the protest and caused chaos. He maintained that his team acted within the confines of the law.
“Kajiado North is headed in the right direction. We are believers in the rule of law and justice,” he said.
Wambui, who has declared interest in contesting the Kajiado North parliamentary seat in the 2027 elections, was accompanied to the station by prominent lawyers Danstan Omari and Cliff Ombeta.
Addressing the media outside the station, Ombeta claimed the summons were politically motivated and intended to intimidate Wambui. “The protest was lawful but disrupted by people with criminal intent,” Ombeta said.
Omari emphasized their compliance with the law and stated they would provide the DCI with additional details surrounding the events. “We are law-abiding citizens. Once we give DCI proper information, we also intend to file a complaint,” he said, adding that legal action would be taken if necessary.
Omari further asserted that Wambui’s constitutional right to vie for public office must be protected.
Wambui was released unconditionally after giving his statement. His legal team affirmed his continued cooperation with authorities, reiterating his commitment to justice and the democratic process.
