Political leaders from across Kenya’s political spectrum have condemned the shoe-throwing incident targeting President William Ruto during his visit to Kuria, Migori County, on May 4, 2025. The attack, which occurred while Ruto was addressing residents in the Kehancha area, has sparked widespread concern over the security of the country’s Head of State and the rising level of public anger.
Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi called the incident “irresponsible” and warned of the potential dangers posed by such acts. He stressed the importance of respecting the presidency, regardless of political differences, and highlighted the gravity of the situation, asking what would have happened if the attacker had been armed with a weapon such as a pistol. Kibagendi’s remarks echoed a growing concern about the safety of top political leaders in the country.
National Assembly Foreign Affairs and Intelligence Committee Chairperson Nelson Koech also expressed his alarm, calling the act a dangerous escalation. He underscored that Kenya must protect the dignity of the office of the President, regardless of political rivalry. Meanwhile, Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni offered a reflective view, suggesting that the incident was a symptom of increasing public discontent and a sign that leaders should consider their contributions to the prevailing anger.
Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu acknowledged the security concerns but also called on President Ruto to reconsider the style of his rallies, which often involve populist gestures such as addressing crowds from the roof of his vehicle. Nyutu advised Ruto to focus more on policy development and its implementation rather than engaging in such high-energy political displays.
As the investigation into the incident continues, police have already interrogated three suspects, with more expected to be pursued. A brief video clip circulating online captured the moment the shoe struck the President, who managed to block it before security personnel intervened. Despite the disruption, Ruto calmly urged his security to remain composed and maintain order at the event.
