The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has sharply criticised the government over human rights violations that occurred during the June 25 anniversary protests. In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday, the legal body condemned the violence, loss of life, and state-imposed media restrictions witnessed during the nationwide demonstrations.
The protests, held on the anniversary of the 2024 anti-Finance Bill demonstrations, left at least eight people dead and scores injured. LSK extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and expressed support for those who were hurt, affirming that peaceful protest is a constitutionally protected right.
“The Law Society of Kenya extends heartfelt condolences to the families of the eight individuals who lost their lives during yesterday’s protests and offers unwavering support to all those who suffered injuries,” the statement read.
The LSK took particular issue with the Communication Authority of Kenya for suspending live TV coverage and raiding media signal transmission facilities in Kiambu and other regions. Terming the move unconstitutional, LSK described the media blackout as a gross violation of the right to access information and freedom of the press.
The organisation also decried the continued use of excessive force by police officers during protests. “Similar to previous demonstrations calling for justice and good governance, yesterday’s protests were marred by instances of excessive force and extremities by the police,” it said, demanding urgent accountability from state agencies.
LSK further condemned the infiltration of peaceful protests by hired goons and warned youth against being used to commit acts of violence. The vandalism of judicial facilities, including Dagoretti Law Courts and the torching of Kikuyu and Ol Kalou courts, was also condemned as an attack on the justice system.
“Destroying or vandalizing our courts amounts to self-sabotage and undermines access to justice,” LSK stated.
The society reaffirmed its commitment to defending the Constitution and called on all government agencies to uphold the rule of law. It pledged to investigate and take legal action over reported human rights abuses.
