The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has publicly disassociated itself from online fundraising initiatives aimed at securing bail for individuals arrested during the recent Saba Saba protests. In a statement issued through its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, the legal body clarified that it is not involved in any fundraising activities and warned the public against falling prey to fraudulent schemes.
“The LSK has received reports of individuals soliciting funds to raise bail for persons arrested during the recent riots. Please note that the recent fundraising drive is not being conducted or endorsed by the LSK national office,” the statement read.
The LSK urged Kenyans to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of any appeals for contributions before sending money. It further stressed the need for vigilance as opportunists might exploit the current political and social unrest to defraud well-meaning citizens.
This clarification comes in the wake of an increase in online appeals seeking financial support to assist arrested youth mainly Gen Z protesters many of whom face serious charges including robbery with violence and terrorism-related offences.
Despite the LSK’s non-involvement, several organisations and individuals have come forward to support those arrested. Among them is Democratic Citizen Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, who recently announced plans to facilitate legal aid and bail for the detained protesters.
Speaking during an interview in Boston, United States, Gachagua pledged that the DCP would mobilise resources transparently. “I will share the official DCP paybill number. Our party is credible; any support we receive, whether from the US or elsewhere, will be used transparently and for the intended purpose,” he said.
He assured the public that all funds raised would go toward ensuring the release of the detained protesters and covering legal fees. His remarks reflect growing political interest in the fate of the arrested youth, highlighting the broader national conversation around civic rights, youth activism, and legal protection.
As the situation unfolds, the LSK has reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and advised Kenyans to remain alert and informed when responding to fundraising appeals related to legal matters.
