The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has announced a Purple Ribbon March on September 12, 2025. The march seeks justice for Kyalo Mbobu, a respected lawyer who was tragically killed in Nairobi.
Call for Solidarity
In a statement on September 11, 2025, LSK President Faith Odhiambo urged lawyers, human rights defenders, and the public to join the march.
“This most unfortunate occurrence marks a sad day for the legal profession and for the entire country. We convey our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Mbobu,” Odhiambo said.
Mbobu’s Tragic Death
Mbobu was fatally shot on September 9, 2025, in a drive-by attack by unknown assailants on a motorcycle. He served as Chairman of the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal and also lectured at the University of Nairobi.
The LSK praised his contributions, particularly in evidence law, noting that his work will continue to guide legal practitioners.
“His service to the country leaves an indelible mark on his legacy. May his soul rest in peace,” Odhiambo added.
Safety Concerns for Advocates
The LSK expressed concern about the safety of advocates. They warned that such attacks could undermine Kenya’s democratic foundations.
“Too often, advocates have been victimized and targeted for the work they do. This incident and other acts of violence against advocates represent a damning test to the administration of justice,” the society said.
Call for Swift Action
The LSK urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to act urgently.
“We decry this detestable act and demand that the perpetrators be hunted down and brought to book,” Odhiambo emphasised.
The society also stressed that unchecked crime threatens Kenya’s liberties and rule of law.
“The free rein of crime in our streets is an affront to the liberties and lawfulness that make Kenya a constitutional democracy. Our security agencies must act decisively to end this menace,” the statement concluded.
March to Honor Mbobu
The Purple Ribbon March will bring together legal professionals and citizens to honor Mbobu’s legacy. It is also a public call for justice and accountability in his brutal murder.
