The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has raised alarm over the unexplained transfer of software developer and activist Rose Njeri from Pangani Police Station, where she had been held following her controversial arrest on Friday, May 30, 2025. Njeri is accused of creating a digital platform that enabled citizens to participate in public discourse on the contentious Finance Bill 2025.
Speaking outside the station on Tuesday morning, June 3, LSK President Faith Odhiambo confirmed that a legal team arrived at Pangani shortly after 7:30 a.m., only to find that Njeri had been moved moments earlier under unclear circumstances.
“We are currently at Pangani Police Station. We arrived here early in the morning, just a few minutes past 7:30, and were told that she had just been picked up,” said Odhiambo.
According to the LSK, Njeri’s legal counsel, Sam a member of the Society’s legal team was also present at the station, but found that Njeri had already been transferred. The LSK has since launched efforts to trace her whereabouts and determine the court where she might be arraigned.
“We ask our members to be vigilant. If Rose is brought before any court, please alert us so that we can ensure she is well represented,” Odhiambo urged.
Njeri’s arrest has triggered outrage from civil society groups, tech innovators, and political leaders who view her detention as an attack on freedom of expression and civic engagement. Many have lauded her for using digital tools to promote transparency and citizen involvement in legislative processes.
The LSK has vowed to continue pursuing her release and defending her constitutional rights, emphasizing that her work was both lawful and aligned with democratic principles.
As calls for her immediate release grow louder, pressure is mounting on authorities to clarify the reasons behind her sudden transfer and ensure that due process is followed. The legal fraternity, activists, and concerned citizens remain on high alert, demanding accountability and transparency in Njeri’s case.
