The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has taken up the case of Simon Warui, a 26-year-old man who died under unclear circumstances while in custody at Mombasa’s Central Police Station.
In a statement released on Monday, September 22, 2025, LSK President Faith Odhiambo confirmed that the society is closely monitoring the matter. She noted that the organization has appointed an advocate to represent Warui’s family and ensure that investigations are conducted transparently.
“We have appointed an advocate to act on behalf of the family in monitoring the investigations and ensuring that the full truth and circumstances leading to Warui’s death are uncovered, and the persons involved are held to account,” Faith said.
Circumstances Surrounding Warui’s Death
According to his family, Warui went missing on a Sunday morning at around 10:00 am. The disappearance was reported at Embakasi Police Station in Nairobi, but days later, he was discovered dead inside a Mombasa police station.
Faith described the situation as deeply troubling, highlighting that the chain of events leading to his death remains unclear.
“The circumstances under which he wound up dead in a police station in Mombasa remain unclear, but we are working closely with our civil society partners and the KNCHR to ensure this matter is investigated swiftly and conclusively,” she stated.
Commitment to Justice
The LSK boss reaffirmed the society’s commitment to ensuring justice for the family, adding that updates on the case will be shared as investigations proceed.
Faith also thanked the Mombasa Law Society chairperson and her team for their role in supporting the process, emphasizing that accountability is crucial in safeguarding public trust in the justice system.
The death of Simon Warui now adds to growing public concern over police accountability and the safety of individuals in custody. The LSK has pledged to pursue the matter until the truth is revealed and those responsible are brought to justice.
