Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has joined millions of Kenyans in mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away on October 15 in India at the age of 80. Odinga, a revered statesman and long-time opposition leader, succumbed to cardiac arrest while surrounded by his family.
His remains were flown back to Kenya aboard a Kenya Airways flight and received with full military honours, marking the beginning of a national mourning period declared by President William Ruto, who also announced that Odinga would be accorded a state funeral.
In a heartfelt statement, Lupita described Odinga as a hero and family friend, fondly referring to him as “Uncle Raila.” She noted that the ODM leader had been a close companion to her father, Kisumu Governor Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o, and played a significant role in their family’s journey.
“I join Kenyans in mourning the passing of the great Hon. Raila Odinga. I knew him from up close as one of my father’s dearest friends, and also as a hero to the nation,” Lupita said.
She added that Odinga’s presence was deeply felt in both personal and national milestones.
“He was there for my dad and for our family in our moments of celebration and grief. He shared our family’s milestones, and we his,” she recalled.
Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, in his own tribute, described Raila as “a movement, a rhythm in our national heartbeat”, praising his courage and lifelong dedication to democracy.
As Kenya concludes the public viewing of Raila’s body in Nairobi, his remains will be transported to Kisumu for final tributes.
Lupita concluded her message with a touching farewell:
“Rest in peace, Uncle Raila. My comfort to the whole Odinga family as they come to terms with this monumental loss.”
