Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi has launched a scathing attack on Deputy President Kithure Kindiki over the government-backed empowerment programmes that have recently dominated the political scene.
Speaking in Mwala on Saturday, August 24, Mwangangi accused the DP of lacking transparency in the initiatives, questioning the source of the vast amounts of money being disbursed at public events. He alleged that the programmes, which have seen leaders donate millions to groups across the country, are politically motivated schemes aimed at confusing Kenyans while diverting public resources.
“For the first time in the history of this country, we are witnessing the biggest theft of public funds through orthodox means by top government officials, shamelessly doing it before the eyes of Kenyans,” Mwangangi charged. He further questioned how leaders could afford to donate over Ksh200 million in less than a month, urging them instead to reveal their business ventures so that ordinary citizens could emulate them.
The deputy governor, who has openly opposed the Kenya Kwanza administration, called on the Kamba community to unite with other Kenyans in voting for leaders who will bring economic and political stability. He described the current regime as “oppressive” and urged citizens to demand accountability from those in power.
Concerns over the sustainability and transparency of the empowerment tours have been echoed by opposition figures. Deputy Minority Leader Robert Mbui recently warned that the DP’s frequent donations, often pegged at Ksh2 million per event, could deplete his personal wealth. “If he donates this amount in all constituencies, it translates to nearly Ksh580 million by the end of his term, which is unsustainable,” the Kathiani MP argued.
However, Kindiki has defended the programmes, insisting they are designed to stimulate community-based economic growth. Speaking in Maragua last month, he said the funds were not mere handouts but targeted interventions to help small-scale traders and self-help groups stay afloat.
“We are here to support chamas and groups in their journey to economic independence. Those opposing this programme do not understand the struggles ordinary Kenyans face daily,” the DP said.
The debate underscores the growing divide between government officials and opposition leaders on the ethics and impact of empowerment programmes.
