Heated exchanges rocked the Machakos County Assembly on Monday evening as Members of County Assembly (MCAs) clashed over alleged irregularities in the recruitment of county staff.
The uproar was triggered after county chief officers failed to appear before the Assembly to respond to questions regarding the procedures used in hiring workers. Their absence fueled tension in the House, with the Minority side seizing the moment to criticize the Majority leadership and the county executive.
Led by Kinanie/Mathatani Ward Representative Francis Kavyu, the Minority side accused the county government of lacking transparency in its recruitment practices. Kavyu alleged that some positions were being filled through favoritism and political connections, undermining merit and fairness in public service appointments.
“This House cannot sit and watch while jobs meant for the people of Machakos are distributed in secrecy. We demand accountability and fairness in all recruitment processes,” Kavyu said during the heated debate.
The Majority side, however, defended the executive, insisting that due process was being followed and accusing the opposition of politicizing the matter. The exchanges soon escalated, forcing Speaker Ann Kiusya to intervene.
In her ruling, Kiusya directed the Public Service and ICT Committee to probe the allegations and present a detailed report to the Assembly within 21 days. She emphasized the need for accountability, noting that the matter had generated public concern.
“The statement sought by Hon. Ngunga is hereby referred to the Labour and ICT Committee, which must report back within 21 days,” the Speaker ruled.
The probe is expected to shed light on whether the county government has adhered to established laws and guidelines in hiring its workforce. Residents of Machakos have also raised questions about inclusivity and fairness in county employment, with many urging leaders to safeguard opportunities for all qualified applicants.
As the Assembly awaits the committee’s report, the issue is likely to remain a hot political topic, with both sides keen to sway public opinion ahead of future county engagements.
