Former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has stirred political debate after suggesting a growing alliance between the Kikuyu and Omogusii communities ahead of the 2027 general election. Speaking during a funeral gathering in Kisii, Machogu encouraged the Gusii people to register as voters, subtly pointing toward a broader political realignment in the country.
In a video that has since gone viral online, Machogu shared insights from his recent visit to Mt Kenya, saying, “Do you want me to tell you the secret of the Kikuyu? They love us very much.” Though he stopped short of naming political players, his remarks were widely interpreted as support for a potential alliance between the Kikuyu and Kisii blocs, possibly under the leadership of former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Machogu, who was ousted from the Cabinet following the Gen Z-led protests in 2024 and replaced by fellow Kisii native Julius Migosi, called on the Gusii community to remain united, focused, and alert to national political shifts. “Let us all register as voters,” he urged, adding that internal dissenters would face consequences at the ballot box. “As for those young men making noise to the contrary… when the time comes, they’ll receive strokes of the cane,” he said metaphorically, signaling political rejection.
This marks Machogu’s first foray into national politics since his exit from government, and his comments appear to lend weight to Matiang’i’s expected presidential bid in 2027. Matiang’i, who returned to the public scene in May 2025, has received growing support across the Gusii region, overshadowing UDA loyalists like Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro and party treasurer Japhet Nyakundi.
As 2027 approaches, Machogu’s remarks underscore a critical moment for political mobilization in Kisii, especially among youth and first-time voters. The potential Kikuyu-Kisii unity could emerge as a decisive force in shaping Kenya’s next leadership, amid shifting loyalties and emerging alliances across the country.
