Senior Presidential Advisor Makau Mutua has warned former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that his influence in Mt Kenya politics may be under threat.
Mutua suggested that Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi could be positioning himself as Gachagua’s rival in the region. His remarks followed developments in the Mbeere North by-elections, where Gachagua’s party pulled out of the race.
Muturi Gains Ground in Mbeere North
On Tuesday, September 16, 2025, Mutua shared his concerns on X. He noted that Muturi’s decision to field a candidate under the Democratic Party (DP) was a show of strength.
“Is @HonJBMuturi positioning himself to DETHRONE @rigathi Mt Kenya? The latter caved in the contest for Mbeere North after a bruising boardroom fight with the former. Apparently, Mr Muturi still has a little fight left in him. Watch out, Riggy G!” Mutua posted.
The Mbeere North parliamentary seat fell vacant after Geoffrey Ruku was appointed to President William Ruto’s Cabinet in March 2025.
Gachagua Explains His Move
Gachagua defended his withdrawal, saying his party, Democracy for the Citizens (DCP), stepped aside to support the DP candidate. He argued that the move was meant to strengthen ties within the United Opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We have agreed that DCP will support the Democratic Party in Mbeere North. The seat rightfully belongs to DP and their candidate should complete the term,” Gachagua stated.
He also praised Muturi, calling him a leader with “undoubted leadership qualities.”
Opposition Unity Questioned
Despite the by-election drama, Gachagua’s allies insist that the opposition remains intact. Embakasi North MP James Gakuya dismissed claims that Gachagua had abandoned the movement.
“Gachagua has not quit. If they plan to push Ruto out, the opposition cannot lay all its cards on the table. The team is united and strategising,” Gakuya said in a TV interview.
Shifting Dynamics Ahead of 2027
As Muturi asserts himself in Mt Kenya, analysts say the rivalry could reshape regional politics. With the opposition divided over who should lead the 2027 presidential bid, unity will be key to mounting a strong challenge against President Ruto.
