Professor Makau Mutua has strongly defended Faith Odhiambo, the President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK). Odhiambo has been under attack since President William Ruto appointed her as vice-chairperson of a panel tasked with compensating victims of protests.
The 15-member panel, chaired by Mutua, is responsible for fast-tracking compensation for victims of demonstrations that have taken place since 2017. While some Kenyans welcomed Odhiambo’s appointment, others accused her of betraying the public by accepting a role in the government panel.
Mutua Calls Out “Weak Men”
Mutua issued a tough statement on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, through his X account. He described the criticism as unfair and rooted in misogyny.
“Only WEAK and INSECURE men attack women, especially those who are professionally successful and beyond reproach,” he said.
Mutua added that those attacking Odhiambo should instead direct their anger at him. He expressed disappointment that some of the criticism came from male lawyers, calling it “juvenile and unbecoming.”
Support From Leaders
Odhiambo has also received support from several leaders. Among them is Migori Senator Eddy Oketch, who defended her in a statement on Friday, September 5, 2025.
Oketch argued that most of the lawyers criticizing Odhiambo have never engaged in meaningful activism. He said they do not understand the sacrifices tied to national struggles.
“Most, if not all, the lawyers criticising LSK President @FaithOdhiambo8 have never gone to any protest that changed this country, never shared about any relatives that were killed during these protests, and never led even cattle-deep committees in their villages,” Oketch said.
The senator praised Odhiambo and fellow panellist Irungu, describing them as courageous and independent leaders who can guide the compensation process with integrity.
Looking Ahead
As the debate continues, supporters insist that Odhiambo’s appointment should not be seen as betrayal. Instead, they say it gives her a chance to serve victims of protests and ensure justice is delivered.
