A massive crowd of supporters in Kisii County forced former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to shift his planned rally from the Kisii Capital Roundabout to Gusii Stadium on May 2. The overwhelming turnout, with supporters filling Capital-Hospital Road and the surrounding streets, brought business in the busy town to a standstill as Matiang’i’s convoy snaked through the area.
Governor Simba Arati, who was hosting Matiang’i, made the announcement to relocate the rally after speeches began at the roundabout. “Because of the huge numbers, we have agreed to move to the stadium, and I appeal to everyone not to enter the playing field,” Arati urged. He praised the turnout, referring to Matiang’i as “our king” and appealed for order as the crowd made its way to the stadium.
Earlier in the day, Matiang’i paid a courtesy call to Governor Arati at his Kisii Town office, where they held a closed-door meeting with other local elected leaders. This was followed by a joint ride through the streets of Kisii before they addressed the cheering crowds.
Matiang’i, who has been on the political radar due to speculation about a potential 2027 presidential bid, made several stopovers in major towns along the Kisii-Sotik Road, engaging with residents. At each stop, he assured his supporters that he was listening to their concerns before making any political decisions. He expressed gratitude for their support, particularly at Nyansiongo Market, where he received a warm reception.
Acknowledging the growing speculations surrounding his 2027 aspirations, Matiang’i hinted that he was open to engaging with leaders nationwide and promised to unveil his plans at the right time. “When the right time comes, I will come back here and tell you what’s next,” he said. His remarks further fueled expectations that he is preparing for a presidential run in 2027, a prospect that has garnered much attention in recent weeks, especially after discussions with key opposition figures like former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
