Mandera County has been rocked by fresh violence following the tragic killing of women and children in Banisa Constituency, an area along the volatile Kenya-Ethiopia border. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with civil society groups urging swift action to ensure justice and restore peace.
In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday, Action for Sustainable Change (AFOSC Kenya) decried the killings, terming them a gross violation of human rights and a direct attack on the country’s moral and social foundations.
“We strongly condemn these senseless and inhumane acts of violence that have claimed the lives of innocent civilians and devastated families and communities,” the organisation stated.
AFOSC emphasised that the targeting of women and children is particularly alarming, describing it as an assault not only on individual dignity but also on the collective security of all Kenyans.
“The targeting of women and children is not only a violation of human rights but also an assault on the dignity and security of every Kenyan,” read part of the statement.
The organisation has called on law enforcement and relevant government agencies to urgently investigate the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. It further urged authorities to address the underlying causes of insecurity in northern Kenya, which has seen recurrent cycles of violence, often fuelled by ethnic tensions, competition over resources, and porous borders.
AFOSC also reiterated its commitment to fostering peace and sustainable development in the region. “Violence is never a solution. Only through unity, accountability, and compassion can we build a future where all people can live in safety and dignity. We stand in solidarity with the affected families and the entire Banisa community during this time of grief,” the organisation added.
As of now, government authorities have not issued an official statement on the killings, deepening public concern and calls for transparency and prompt action. The latest violence underscores the urgent need for long-term peacebuilding initiatives and stronger security measures to protect vulnerable communities in northern Kenya.
