Retired Chief Justice David Maraga has officially declared his intention to run for president in the 2027 General Election. The announcement was made at the United Green Movement (UGM) Party headquarters in Nairobi, where he was unveiled as the party’s presidential candidate.
Maraga, who served as the 14th Chief Justice of Kenya, is stepping into the political arena with a promise to offer leadership anchored on integrity, justice, and the rule of law. He told supporters that his focus will now be on popularising and strengthening UGM ahead of the next elections.
The United Green Movement Party is associated with politician Neto Agostinho, who is also its co-party leader. Neto first came into the political limelight when he was elected as Member of Parliament for Ndhiwa Constituency in a 2012 by-election, running on an ODM ticket. He served until 2017 before shifting focus to building UGM, positioning it as an alternative voice in Kenya’s crowded political space.
With Maraga now taking the helm as the party’s presidential candidate, UGM is expected to gain more national visibility. Political analysts say his entry into the 2027 race could disrupt traditional alignments and attract voters seeking leadership that departs from old political rivalries.
Maraga’s reputation as a principled leader, particularly his historic role in nullifying the 2017 presidential election, is likely to play a central role in shaping his campaign narrative. Supporters believe his record in the judiciary will appeal to Kenyans tired of corruption and political impunity.
The move marks a bold step for the retired judge, who becomes one of the first high-profile figures to declare interest in succeeding President William Ruto. As campaigns slowly take shape, Maraga’s candidacy is set to inject fresh energy into Kenya’s political contest.
