Former Chief Justice David Maraga has expressed willingness to work with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka ahead of the 2027 general elections, but he has set strict conditions for any potential collaboration. Speaking on Obinna TV Extra on Monday, November 24, Maraga highlighted his long-standing friendship with Kalonzo, noting that they were law classmates at the University of Nairobi.
“Mr Kalonzo is a good man. We attended the same university, so there is mutual respect. I am open to working with him, but only if he embraces my vision for the country,” Maraga said.
He stressed that any partnership must be rooted in shared values, including upholding the rule of law, fighting corruption, and empowering the youth. “If he comes and embraces my vision, we will work together. As the presidential flag bearer, others must rally behind me,” he explained, making it clear that he will not cede ground to anyone.
On working with former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi, Maraga stated that collaboration would only be possible if Matiangi meets the “irreducible minimums” of his vision, which includes integrity, anti-graft commitment, and adherence to the rule of law.
Maraga also ruled out any possibility of working with President William Ruto, citing incompatible values and asserting that their paths would never align.
The former chief justice revealed that his entry into politics was inspired by the 2024 Gen Z–led protests against the Finance Bill, describing the demonstrations as a wake-up call for leaders to address youth grievances. “The youth cried out for justice and opportunity. As an elder, I cannot sit idle while they suffer,” he noted, highlighting his commitment to championing youth issues as a central driver of his political ambition.
Maraga’s statements signal a clear agenda for the 2027 elections: partnerships will be conditional on shared principles, with a focus on integrity, anti-corruption, and youth empowerment, positioning him as a candidate prioritizing values over alliances.
