Former Chief Justice David Maraga is set to issue a public statement on Monday, June 16, 2025, in response to a growing outcry over extra-judicial killings in Kenya. The move follows the controversial death of 27-year-old Albert Omondi Ojwang, who reportedly died in police custody after being arrested in Homa Bay County on June 7.
In a statement released by the Maraga ‘27 campaign, the retired CJ said he would “notify all Kenyans of goodwill” about the planned course of action, which is expected to be formally addressed during a press briefing scheduled for 10 am outside Vigilance House in Nairobi.
Ojwang’s death has ignited widespread public condemnation and renewed demands for police accountability. According to reports, he died shortly after being transferred to Central Police Station in Nairobi, where conflicting narratives have emerged regarding his condition. Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) maintain Ojwang was in good health when he was handed over to the station. However, other police personnel claim he appeared critically ill upon arrival and that they attempted to save him.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since taken over investigations and summoned the officers involved for questioning. While some officers appeared at IPOA offices accompanied by legal counsel, others did not. IPOA has been directed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to conclude and submit the investigative file within seven days.
However, IPOA has encountered challenges in its probe. Key CCTV footage from the Officer Commanding Station’s (OCS) office, which may have provided vital evidence, is reportedly missing—raising serious concerns about possible tampering or obstruction of justice.
Maraga’s anticipated statement is likely to place further pressure on the police and investigative authorities to ensure transparency and justice in the case. As calls for reform and accountability mount, his intervention could mark a pivotal moment in Kenya’s ongoing struggle against extra-judicial killings and impunity within law enforcement agencies.
