Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially declared his interest in vying for the presidency in the 2027 general elections, pledging to restore order, uphold the rule of law, and fight corruption head-on.
Speaking during a televised interview on NTV, Maraga expressed concern over the country’s current state, saying Kenya urgently needs fixing. He vowed to provide bold and principled leadership to reset the nation on a path of integrity, professionalism, and constitutional order.
“I am deeply disturbed by what is happening in the country. Seeing our young people being handled the way they have been is worrying,” said Maraga. “After consultations and serious reflection, I’ve made the decision to run for the presidency in 2027.”
Maraga emphasized that his leadership would be anchored on professionalism. He committed to appointing experts across various sectors and empowering them to perform their duties independently, while ensuring strict accountability.
“As a lawyer, I know I’m not an expert in every field. I will bring in qualified professionals in health, education, and other areas, allow them to do their work, and hold them accountable. That’s the leadership Kenya needs,” he said.
Central to his vision is a return to constitutionalism and the rule of law. Maraga lamented the current erosion of legal order, where those in authority act with impunity, threatening national stability.
“We are headed toward a total breakdown of the rule of law. If those in power believe they can do as they please without consequence, we can’t call ourselves a nation,” he warned.
Maraga also pledged to tackle corruption without fear or favor. Recalling his judicial record, he said those found guilty of graft under his leadership were removed from office—and he intends to continue that firm stance.
“I know what I’m getting into. I will step on thick toes, but someone has to do it. I am ready,” he affirmed.
Maraga’s entry into the 2027 race adds a fresh dynamic to the political landscape, with his campaign expected to revolve around integrity, institutional reform, and a call for national renewal.
