Tensions flared in Maragua constituency after residents of Kenolhe, Kimorori, chased away MP Mary Wamaua during a visit to the local sports grounds. The residents expressed strong opposition to government plans to transform the field into a site for government offices, sparking heated protests.
The dispute dates back to 2022 when the Maragua NG-CDF committee allocated Ksh24 million for the construction of the subcounty headquarters, an ICT centre, and a modern court. Reports also suggest proposals for an affordable housing project on the same land, which further angered the community.
For decades, the Kenolhe grounds have been the only accessible recreation facility in the area, used daily by youth for sports, training, and social bonding. Residents fear that losing the field will leave young people idle, increasing the risk of crime and other social challenges.
“We want to grow our talents, but now they are taking over this field; what will we do?” one youth questioned, adding that up to 15 teams often train there on the same day. Others called for basic amenities such as washrooms and dressing rooms rather than the complete loss of the field.
Another resident lamented: “We keep ourselves busy on the field, shun antisocial behaviours, and bond with each other for mental wellness. Taking it away will leave a big gap in our community.”
In response, MP Mary Wamaua defended the project, stating that the land was legally earmarked and dismissing claims of unlawful grabbing. “How can one grab the security powerhouse of a sub-county and construct their own houses? We are building government offices,” she told KNA.
Despite her assurances, the residents have vowed to continue opposing the move until an alternative site is identified, leaving the standoff unresolved.
