Opposition leaders have vowed to remain united ahead of the 2027 General Election, with NARC Kenya leader and PLP principal Martha Karua declaring her presidential bid. Speaking at the PLP National Delegates Conference in Nairobi’s Ufungamano House, Karua made a bold pledge, promising to serve only one term if elected.
“If elected president, I will serve for only one term. Kidole kimoja hakivunji chawa… we will field one opposition candidate,” Karua stated.

The declaration comes as the opposition prepares to mount a formidable challenge against President William Ruto, whose Kenya Kwanza government has faced criticism over what rivals term as “unrealistic policies” that have hurt ordinary Kenyans since 2022.
The event brought together key opposition figures, including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K boss Eugene Wamalwa, Deputy Party’s Justin Muturi, and DCP’s Rigathi Gachagua. The leaders emphasized unity, warning members against betraying the movement’s mission to dislodge Ruto in 2027.
Wamalwa stressed the need for sacrifice, saying: “Tutahakikisha one term has happened na Ruto arudi Sugoi.” Gachagua, who previously supported Ruto, affirmed his readiness to back Karua: “We shall make whatever sacrifices necessary… I am willing to sacrifice and support you the way I did for Ruto.”
Kalonzo Musyoka echoed the sentiment, calling the alliance “a government in waiting” and praising Karua’s leadership. The opposition bloc also alleged that there are deliberate attempts to divide them before 2027, but vowed to remain steadfast.
During the conference, the PLP resolved to expand its structure by creating three deputy party leader positions and establishing a 16-member shadow cabinet tasked with presenting proactive policy alternatives.
With Karua’s one-term pledge and a unified opposition front, the stage is set for a high-stakes political battle that could reshape Kenya’s leadership in 2027.
