People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has refuted claims of a fallout with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, terming the reports as false and misleading.
This comes after a viral social media post alleged that Karua had accused Gachagua of lacking inclusivity and respect in making key decisions within the United Opposition movement. The post further suggested that discontent within Gachagua’s camp had prompted several members of the Democracy for the Citizens’ Party (DCP) to quit the coalition.
However, Karua moved swiftly to set the record straight. Taking to her official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday morning, she dismissed the allegations as “fake news,” urging Kenyans to be cautious about unverified online content.
Her response came after the viral claims stirred online debate, with many Kenyans expressing concern over possible divisions among the opposition leaders.
The denial by Karua comes amid ongoing speculation about internal wrangles within the united opposition, particularly over who should be the coalition’s flag bearer in the 2027 General Elections.
Despite the rumours, Karua and Gachagua were seen together on Friday during the Wiper Party’s National Delegates Conference at Uhuru Park, Nairobi. The event, attended by thousands, featured top opposition leaders including Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, Jubilee’s Fred Matiang’i, and DAP-Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa.
In a show of unity, Gachagua publicly declared his support for Kalonzo’s 2027 presidential bid, vowing to rally his supporters behind him.
“The formula we use will help Kalonzo to be the only presidential candidate from the opposition. I and my millions of followers will support and campaign for him. The campaign I will undertake will be ten times better than what I did for Ruto,” said Gachagua.
Karua’s clarification and the leaders’ united front at the event effectively put to rest the rumours of discord within the opposition ranks.
