People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has come out strongly to dismiss claims that she has praised President William Ruto, following the circulation of a poster on social media that falsely depicted her as rallying behind the Head of State.
The poster, which featured Karua’s image and messages lauding President Ruto’s leadership, suggested that she had endorsed his vision and that her party was aligned with his administration. It bore inscriptions such as “Martha Karua (NRC) rallies behind President Ruto’s bold vision! With Kusema na Kutenda, she champions a Kenya where justice triumphs over cartels. #RutoNiMnoma.”
Karua swiftly disowned the poster, calling it fake and misleading. Taking to her official X account on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, the former Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance deputy presidential candidate issued a scathing statement against Ruto.
“@WilliamsRuto is the most cowardly and incompetent person to occupy the office of president,” Karua wrote, making clear that she has not shifted her critical stance towards the Kenya Kwanza administration.
The poster also falsely attributed supportive statements to her party, the PLP, claiming that “real change demands courage, and President William Ruto has shown it.” Karua dismissed such claims as attempts to manipulate public opinion.
Her sharp rebuttal comes against the backdrop of her recent criticisms of Ruto’s leadership. On August 28, 2025, Karua accused the president of hypocrisy after he made remarks on vision and discipline. She argued that the administration lacked credibility to lecture Kenyans on discipline while allegedly presiding over human rights violations, corruption, and intimidation.
“@WilliamsRuto discipline means adherence to the rule of law, it means respecting people’s rights, not violating them. A regime that plunders, kills and terrorises its people is unlikely to lead the nation to prosperity,” Karua stated.
Karua’s position underscores ongoing political tensions between opposition figures and the president, with disinformation campaigns increasingly being used to sway public narratives. Her emphatic disowning of the poster reaffirms her role as one of Ruto’s fiercest critics, determined to challenge what she describes as the regime’s disregard for rights, justice, and the rule of law.
