People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has expressed deep sorrow following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga. In a heartfelt condolence message to Mama Ida Odinga and the entire Odinga family, Karua described Raila’s passing as both a personal and national tragedy.
“It is with deep shock and profound sadness that I have received the news of the passing of your dear husband, father, friend, and great leader – Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga,” Karua said.
She hailed Raila’s lifelong dedication to Kenya’s democracy and freedom, describing his political journey as monumental. “His legacy towers like a colossus across Kenya and the African continent,” she noted, adding that his life was a testament to courage, endurance, and unwavering commitment to justice.
Karua recalled Raila’s years of imprisonment and sacrifice, saying few lives have been as fully devoted to the liberation of Kenya. “He bore immense personal sacrifice, spending years behind bars and away from his loved ones in pursuit of freedom for all Kenyans. That was his burden to carry,” she said.
The veteran politician also praised Mama Ida Odinga for her strength and resilience during Raila’s political struggles. “The weight you have carried as his partner in both life and struggle is beyond what most can imagine, and for that, Kenya owes you and your family an unpayable debt of gratitude.”
Reflecting on their long political association, Karua said she had the privilege of working alongside Raila for over three decades — sometimes as an ally, sometimes as an opponent — but always united by a shared vision for a freer, fairer Kenya.
Karua concluded her message with a solemn farewell, calling Raila “a fearless defender of the people” and “one of Africa’s most consequential sons.”
“Rest in Peace, Jakom. Rest in Peace, Kinara Wangu.”
