A devastating fire engulfed parts of Mathare B area in Nairobi early Monday morning, claiming the lives of five people and critically injuring four others. The fire, which broke out in the densely populated informal settlement, also left dozens of families homeless after several houses were reduced to ashes.
According to Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Sedah, the fire started in the early hours and spread rapidly due to the closely packed structures made of timber and iron sheets. Emergency response teams, including the Nairobi County Fire Brigade and the military, were swiftly deployed to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby homes.
Sedah expressed deep regret over the tragic incident, assuring affected families that the government is working to assess the full extent of the damage and offer necessary support. He also commended the quick intervention by first responders, which helped save lives and protect surrounding properties.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established, but investigations are underway. Meanwhile, displaced residents are in urgent need of shelter, food, and basic supplies. Humanitarian agencies and well-wishers are being urged to step in and assist those affected by the tragedy.
